CCD Test Chamber Setup for DAMIC-M/LSM

ABSTRACT: The search for non luminous matter is demanding to have better sensitivity for the direct Dark Matter detection. On this path, the Institute of Physics in Cantabria has installed within its facilities a CCD Test Chamber aim- ing to calibrate and measure the dark current in skippers CCDs to decrease the noise level for the DAMIC-M experiment. In this final master project I describe some basics on skipper CCDs, the Ironman CCD Test Chamber components, the LEACH system, the Slow Control and a I give a brief analy- sis on the cryostat performance and the first CCD images taken in the Clean Room.RESUMEN: La búsqueda de materia no luminosa exige una mejor sensibilidad para la detección directa de Materia Oscura. En este rubro, el Instituto de Física de Cantabria ha instalado dentro de sus instalaciones una Cámara de Prue- bas para CCD’s con el objetivo de calibrar y medir la corriente oscura de los skippers CCDs con la intención de disminuir el nivel de ruido en el experimento DAMIC-M. Characterising exoplanetary atmospheres with ARIEL

Treballs Finals de Grau de Física, Facultat de Física, Universitat de Barcelona, Curs: 2020, Tutors: Carme Jordi, Ignasi Ribas, Guillem Anglada-EscudéFuture instruments (e.g. JWST, ARIEL) will study the atmospheres of transiting exoplanets with an unprecedented level of detail. In this work, the retrievability of atmospheric parameters of exoplanets is studied for hot Jupiters, a warm Neptune and a cool sub-Neptune in the context of the ARIEL mission. Synthetic observations are generated using TauREx III for forward-modelling and retrieval. The results show that ARIEL is able to significantly detect main gaseous species in hot Jupiters and warm Neptunes with a single transit observation. The study of smaller and cooler planets will require several observations. For K2-18 b, I estimate a minimum of 50 observations to distinguish a primary atmosphere from a secondary one. This work outlines the scientific capabilities of ARIEL and provides estimates on the quality of observations for different types of exoplanets

A Comparison of Machine-Learning Methods to Select Socioeconomic Indicators in Cultural Landscapes

Cultural landscapes are regarded to be complex socioecological systems that originated as a result of the interaction between humanity and nature across time. Cultural landscapes present complex-system properties, including nonlinear dynamics among their components. There is a close relationship between socioeconomy and landscape in cultural landscapes, so that changes in the socioeconomic dynamic have an effect on the structure and functionality of the landscape. Several numerical analyses have been carried out to study this relationship, with linear regression models being widely used. However, cultural landscapes comprise a considerable amount of elements and processes, whose interactions might not be properly captured by a linear model. In recent years, machine-learning techniques have increasingly been applied to the field of ecology to solve regression tasks. These techniques provide sound methods and algorithms for dealing with complex systems under uncertainty. The term ‘machine learning’ includes a wide variety of methods to learn models from data. In this paper, we study the relationship between socioeconomy and cultural landscape (in Andalusia, Spain) at two different spatial scales aiming at comparing different regression models from a predictive-accuracy point of view, including model trees and neural or Bayesian networks

A partir del ensayo “Supernatural Horror in Literature”, de H. P. Lovecraft, hemos construido un modelo descriptivo coherente del género literario del horror con sus relaciones internas y externas, y que bien podría servir de punto de partida para posibles ampliaciones. Para ello, hemos cotejado, revisado y desarrollado determinados conceptos de los estudios clave sobre el miedo, desde Aristóteles hasta los más recientes acercamientos, pasando por Radcliffe, Freud, Delumeau, Kristeva, Carroll, y Jackson, entre otros, y hemos determinado las diferencias entre dos géneros tan cercanos como el terror y el horror. El presente artículo analizará diversos acercamientos teóricos al respecto, que van desde la historia de la literatura, al psicoanálisis, la psicología y la teoría literaria, buscará puntos en común y desarrollará conceptos teóricos clave para la demarcación del genero del horror, y que es, desde hace tiempo, un género perfectamente delimitadoBeing inspired by H. The Political Context in the Construction of Citizens in the Colombian School: A Questioning to Conflict and Distortion of Education

En este artículo se tratará de revisar el contexto político de la escuela colombiana desde cuatro perspectivas fundamentales: la ciudadanía y la escuela, entendiendo esta como un proceso de construcción de ciudadanías; la revisión de algunas políticas de imposición, allí donde han incidido diferentes factores; una pregunta por el desplazamiento, y, por último, el reconocimiento que requiere la escuela, sus conflictos y su distorsión para iniciar una lucha desde la resistencia. Una de las conclusiones del texto será la edificación de las ciudadanías desde el criterio propio, no desde el de las imposiciones. Este texto se presenta como una disertación interesante, donde se insiste constantemente en que las políticas públicas no deben desplazar la labor de la escuela.This article is intended to review the political context of the Colombian school from four basic points of view: Citizenship and school (this latter understood as a citizenship construction process), revision of some imposition policies (where different factors have had an influence), a question for displacement, and recognition required by the school, its conflicts and its distortion to start a fight from the opposition. One of the conclusions of the article is the erection of citizenship from a personal standpoint and not from that of impositions. This article is presented as an interesting dis­sertation where emphasis is always made on the fact that public policies should not disregard the school function

The Role of Cultural Landscapes in the Delivery of Provisioning Ecosystem Services in Protected Areas

The aim of this paper is to assess and highlight the significance of cultural landscapes in protected areas, considering both biodiversity and the delivery of provisioning ecosystem services. In order to do that, we analyzed 26 protected areas in Andalusia (Spain), all of them Natural or National Parks, regarding some of their ecosystem services (agriculture, livestock grazing, microclimate regulation, environmental education and tourism) and diversity of the four terrestrial vertebrate classes: amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and birds. A cluster analysis was also run in order to group the 26 protected areas according to their dominant landscape. The results show that protected areas dominated by dehesa (a heterogeneous system containing different states of ecological maturity), or having strong presence of olive groves, present a larger area of delivery of provisioning ecosystem services, on average. These cultural landscapes play an essential role not only for biodiversity conservation but also as providers of provisioning ecosystem services

Implicaciones de la incorporación de las fuentes no convencionales de energía en los contratos de concesión de áreas de servicio exclusivo para la prestación del servicio de energía en zonas no interconectadas

Los Contratos de Concesión de Área de Servicio Exclusivo (Contratos ASE) son una herramienta a través de la cual, no solo se puede contribuir en gran medida a fines de expansión del servicio de energía eléctrica, sino que también son un mecanismo adecuado para fomentar la lucha contra el cambio climático y propiciar la incorporación de las Fuentes No Convencionales de Energía Renovables en la matriz energética nacional, logrando la sustitución de la generación con combustibles fósiles en las Zonas No Interconectadas del país. Lo anterior cobra especial importancia en el marco del Plan Nacional de Electrificación Rural 2018 – 2031 (PNER 2018-2031), el cual se deriva del Acuerdo Final para la Terminación del Conflicto y la Construcción de una Paz Estable y Duradera firmado el día 24 de agosto de 2016 y propende, entre otras cosas, por la implementación de soluciones de generación eléctrica, aisladas centralizadas o individuales en zonas rurales afectadas por el conflicto armado, a través de esquemas empresariales como las Áreas de Servicio Exclusivo.Exclusive Service Area Contracts (ASE Contracts) are a tool to contribute greatly to the purpose of expanding the electric power service, and also an adequate mechanism to promote the fight against change climate and promote the incorporation of Non-Conventional Renewable Energy Sources into the national energy matrix, achieving the replacement of generation with fossil fuels in the Non-Interconnected Zones of the country.
